Folks are saying they might as well emulate than buy Mario 3D All-Stars. So let's go through the process of what that takes.
I'll trust you can download Dolphin and open your Mario Sunshine iso file. Great! We've got a 640x528 accurately emulated output. We want this to be *better* than All-Stars so we're not done. https://t.co/MIF440abip
Go into the graphics settings and bump up the internal resolution to whatever size you want and let's click that "Widescreen Hack" toggle cause it's 2020 not 2002. https://t.co/GTmkIK7S9D
Oh no that's not great. It's HD but the widescreen hack made weird ghosts of everything. https://t.co/Ynh7Kld6Ks
Disable the hack, right click on the game in the browser, then in the properties menu under Gecko Codes check Widescreen and restart the game. https://t.co/Z9tYYyvEsO
Alright! That code not only fixes the ghosting but moves the GUI to the edges without stretching. But now all the textures look blurry because we're in HD. :( https://t.co/t0nO6aKKQ9
Download an HD texture pack and put it in the /load/textures/GMSE01 folder inside you Dolphin folder. In the Advanced tab of the Graphics options check "Load Custom Textures" and "Prefetch Custom Textures". https://t.co/QCm8thIVqA
Wow! That looks great! We're basically at the quality level of All-Stars at this point, but we want 60fps too right? https://t.co/HJHQzTVBq5
Go back into the game properties and enter the Gecko code that matches the region of your copy of the game. There are a lot of versions out there so do your best. https://t.co/l1wSDBmsFN
Once you've got that it'll be looking buttery smooth! https://t.co/3zmvKBQShx
Mario Sunshine FPS comparison https://youtu.be/cNvH1GrWDyM 30 vs 60
But wait... did you notice something weird about the goop? It's blocky! That's the result of "Scaled EFB Copy" being checked off by default in graphics options. Uncheck it and all the graffiti look smooth! https://t.co/klNSum8Vy1
Aaaaand that fix causes another problem. "Scaled EFB Copy" is what makes various effects run in HD. So now the heat haze is done in SD. As you move away from a wall you can see it suddenly get blurry. https://t.co/sB4IF8Qqoj
The fix for that is... turn off the effect completely with another Gecko code... and the widescreen doesn't apply to screen transitions so they look dumb... and 60fps causes falling stars in the corning that you gotta find a fix for... and... https://t.co/QJDuOcatxl
The moral is this: don't take it as given that emulating a game is easy or that the enhancements on PC are purely good. This is the enthusiast path and Nintendo selling the games emulating is worth it to everyone out there who doesn't want to go through this.
